Assistant General Manager Recruitment, Melbourne
An Assistant General Manager in hospitality supports the commercial and operational running of a venue while building toward full GM responsibility. We look for people with genuine breadth, not just floor experience, but an interest in the numbers side too.
What we look for in an Assistant General Manager
A strong AGM is a GM in training who can already hold the venue on their own. This is how we separate them from a floor manager with a bigger title.
How we screen-
Real commercial exposure
Budgeting, rostering to a cost target and supplier conversations, not just floor experience with a bigger title. An AGM should already understand why the numbers look the way they do.
How we checkWe ask what they have owned commercially and how the GM measured them on it.
-
Has deputised and made the call
Covering the floor is not the same as running the venue. We look for someone who has stepped in for the GM and made real decisions in their absence.
How we checkReferees are asked about specific occasions they ran the venue, and what decisions they made.
-
Cross-department experience
An AGM who only knows one section struggles when the GM is away. We want someone who has worked across floor, bar, kitchen liaison and events.
How we checkWe map their experience across departments and probe the thin areas at interview.
-
On a genuine path to GM
The best AGMs are building toward the top job, not parked in the role. That ambition is what keeps them engaged and growing in your venue.
How we checkWe ask where they want to be in two years, and whether their record so far supports it.
